In its efforts to highlight the importance of reading the Elmore Stoutt High School honoured four outstanding writers who have contributed in the educational advancement of the Territory. The honourees are Dr. Charles Wheatley, Dr. Quincy Lettsome, Dr. Patricia Turnbull, and Mr. Vernon W. Pickering (pictured here receiving certificate from Minister of Education Hon. Myron Walwyn). On 2 May, Vernon was guest of honour at “Musica Insieme” where he sang “Without You – Sin Ti”, “Stardust”, and “Grande, Grande”. Show presenter Roby di Nunno warmly welcomed Vernon calling him “mythical”, and co-presenter Lara Denora gave a short biography of the vocalist. The exceedingly popular daily musical show is aired at dinner time and repeated the following day at lunch time by the national network 7Gold Musica Telecity reaching millions of Italian viewers and others. Huge enthusiastic ovations saluted each of the three songs; and it was clear to all that the audience was totally absorbed which was confirmed by the accolades of the host of the show. Vernon took the opportunity to be a very effective ambassador-at-large of the British Virgin Islands during the interview that concluded his guest appearance.

VERNON GREETED BY STANDING OVATION AT CANALE ITALIA During his recent tour in Europe, Vernon was invited to make two appearances at “Ballando & Cantando” at national network Canale Italia where he wowed the public with “The Closest Thing to Crazy”, “Never Never”, and on the second appearance “My World, Il Mio Mondo” by Umberto Bindi. The public thoroughly enjoyed Vernon’s renditions and greeted his last song given as a clamored encore -- “My World” -- with a true standing ovation. This was a most amazing command performance by the Virgin Islands vocalist.

FANTASTICANDO (Phantasizing) popular syndicated weekly variety show aired by dozens of Italian television stations from North to deep South as well as a number of SKY channels all over Europe has just recorded a new episode with special guest VERNON (Pickering) singing the great classical TORNA A SURRIENTO (the famous warhorse of Pavarotti, Domingo & Carreras) and attracting thundering applause and tears to the eyes of some members of the audience; he also sang YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME - Pino Donaggio's international hit of the 1960s. Show host ADRIANO FUMAGALLI introduced Vernon who was able to speak Italian in his answers.
